Health and Wellbeing
Despite the fact that 20% of people with traumatic SCI in the UK are discharged into care homes, there is little research that has focused on what their experience is like. This project aimed to address this gap by using an in-depth interview methodology with 20 adults who currently live or have lived in a care home for more than two years.
Most of the participants reported that being in a care home damaged their physical health, quality of life (QoL) and psychological wellbeing. This damage, in turn, resulted in depression. For some of the participants, this damage to wellbeing was so severe that they considered suicide.
This is because the care home environment limits a physically active lifestyle that can boost psychological wellbeing, and restricts access to “exercise as medicine” to avoid secondary health conditions like pressure sores. This oppresses the participants and violates their social dignity and human rights, as articulated by a social model of disability.
Medication Management
A comprehensive and ongoing medication management plan is offered to ensure that patients receive the desired outcomes from their medications. They can also notify the patient’s medical team of any aberrations from the prescribed schedule and dosage.
Personal Care
Unlike assisted living facilities, care homes offer more one-on-one attention. They also tend to be smaller communities, making them a good option for seniors who prefer more intimate settings. This also reduces the likelihood of health changes or illnesses going unnoticed.
They will have access to shared lounges, dining rooms, and outside spaces.
Some care homes also provide nursing care. This eliminates the stress of moving between homes as care needs change. Some care homes even have secure dementia units. Residents with more advanced dementia can be moved into these special units to ensure their safety and well-being.
Socialization
Loneliness is one of the biggest issues affecting elderly people and care homes offer plenty of opportunities for socialisation.
This is very important because loneliness is known to lead to a decline in cognitive ability. Regular conversations can also trigger the release of oxytocin which is a hormone that reduces anxiety needs read more hear.
